2021 Volunteer Opportunities

There are many ways you can help with VBS! Please read the descriptions below and prayerfully consider where you would like to serve before you register. All VBS volunteers must attend a training session and comply with First Baptist Cumming Church’s VBS safety policies and procedures.

Greeter/Runners

This team is comprised of adults who will show God’s love to everyone on campus during VBS by being a friendly, helpful presence. Provide a warm welcome to families each day - as families arrive and line up in the parking lot, assist with the car line by escorting kids from the car inside the church, and serve as a gentle buffer to keep ministry areas secure. This team will consist of 3 posts: Parking Lot, Car Line, and Campus Runners.

Floater

Like to be on the move, flexible, and can switch gears on a dime? Then you may want to consider this role. This role includes tasks to keep VBS running smoothly, support with daily tasks, assist wherever needed, or substitute in another role in the event of an emergency.

Music

This team is comprised of adult and youth volunteers who will lead in the large group openings. We need people who are energetic, and excited to lead in front of a group. Those in this role will help lead songs, teach motions to songs. This role involves every day of VBS as well as a few potential rehearsals prior to VBS week. Music provided in advance along with any training necessary to effectively guide children in learning songs.

Prep Crew: Aren’t free the week of VBS, but want to still help. Prep encompasses tasks big and small that support VBS before the actual event. These days/projects will occur throughout the year. Although the jobs may sometimes involve specific skills, most involve painting, sorting, cutting, counting, prepping, and organizing.

Set-Up Team

VBS setup will occur the Sunday before VBS. Many hands, make light work. If you cannot help the week of VBS but are interested in helping with set-up before the VBS begins this would be a great option for you.

Nursery

Childcare is available for children of volunteers who do not meet the minimum age requirement during VBS week (NOTE: you must register them to reserve a spot). This role is made up of adult and youth helpers that have an interest in carrying for our littlest campers. This role involves keeping our little ones safe and sound, and organizing and carrying out age-appropriate activities with the provided curriculum.

Lead Teacher

Is responsible for a group of children (Pre-K to 4th grade) throughout the week of VBS with reading the Bible, reviewing memory verses, praying, and talking with the children about the daily spiritual truths. Throughout the day, the Leader will make sure the children are safely chaperoned and accounted for. The Leader will also assist the children during VBS stations, and help them learn the important Godly points for the day.

Assistant Teacher

Provide encouragement, direction, and guidance helping your lead teacher with the various activities.

SPECIAL FRIENDS: One-on-one helper to special needs child—help them have a great experience at VBS.

Youth Volunteer(6th – 12th grade)

Helps the Group Leader to fulfill the responsibilities outlined for the Group Leader. The youth role is very important, cooperating with the Leader, assisting and engaging the kids throughout the day, safely chaperoning the kids throughout the day, and serving as a positive role model help make this role invaluable. Youth Volunteer Registration cards can be found in the Middle School and High School Buildings. Parent confirmation required

FBC VBS Safety Policy & Procedures

It is important for those that volunteer at VBS to understand some basic policies and procedures that are in place to help protect the children, volunteers, and the church. Below are the most important policies and procedures for VBS. After reading them, please let our VBS staff know if you have any questions at all.

Volunteer Screening

  • All volunteers 18 and older will be screened via a criminal background check.

  • All volunteers will be given the important policies and procedures to read and understand.

  • All classes and activities will be monitored by the FBC and VBS staff the week of VBS.

General Policies

  • NO VOLUNTEER SHOULD EVER BE ALONE WITH A CHILD.

  • If at all possible, take children to the bathroom in groups. No one should be in the bathroom with children ages Kindergarten and above unless there is an emergency. Leaders can stand at the door while children use the bathroom.

  • For any rooms that have a window on the door, please do not cover the window with decora- tions. Visibility needs to be maintained into all classrooms.

  • Teenagers are under the leadership of adult volunteers and staff. Teenagers can be given very important roles to serve the week of VBS, but they do not need to be given sole responsibility without other adults present.

Safety Procedures

  • Children who need medical care or assistance need to be taken to the nurse’s station in the Atrium.

  • In the event of an emergency situation (fire, severe weather, lockdown, etc.) please follow the guidelines listed in the guidebook.

  • For any other situations, please notify your area director or VBS staff.

Abuse Reporting

  • In the event a child shares with you that they are or have been the victim of abuse, immediately notify Laura Nixon.

  • DO NOT share that information with anyone else at any time including other teachers or staff.

VBS Headquarters

The VBS staff can be found at the VBS Headquarters in the Atrium or by having your area director contact the staff on the radio.
